Overview

Biochar is applicable to all soils, no matter the geography, environment, soil or plant type.

Given the importance of tree growth, health and resilience to forest productivity and the profitability of forest operations, anything that can be done to improve these metrics is essential to forestry owners and managers.  Biochar has a unique role to play in improving these metrics.

In recent years forest operators and tree growers have used biochar in plantation trials, orchard operations and in urban and suburban locations. The City of Stockholm has been pursuing a multi-year strategy to improve its city trees—with significant positive results—by using biochar to improve soil quality (Planting Urban Trees with Biochar – The Stockholm Project).  Results have shown:

  • Increase soil porosity
  • Enhanced root growth
  • Increased tree vigor and growth rates

Similar studies have been performed using biochar in orchards with significantly improved tree growth and productivity rates.  An Australian biochar trial with an avocado planting showed trees treated with biochar significantly outperformed in growth and fruit production compared to non-biochar treated trees…and trees continue to outperform five years into the trial.

  • Improved tree growth
  • Increased leaf nutrients
  • Increased nutrient availability
  • Improved soil physical and chemical properties

Evidence and experience show the multiple benefits of using biochar in forest, orchard and tree plantings.
